The first laboratory responsible for testing birds for the deadly H5N1 avian flu virus will be put into operation at an official ceremony by late April, BASA has learned from Vitalie Chelaru, ad-interim director of the republican centre for veterinary diagnosis. <\/p>\n

The equipment installed at the republican centre for veterinary diagnosis was purchased from the European Union’s unreimbursable financing of 300,000 euros. Experts appreciate the acquisition as "the most important provision of the bird flu prevention plan," a document approved in October 2005. <\/p>\n

The laboratory is similar to the one based in Bucharest and, therefore, Moldova will stop using the services of the Romanian laboratory, which welcomes Moldova to carry out tests accordingly to an agreement. <\/p>\n

In order to prevent losses related to spreading of avian influenza, fowl breeders in Moldova have slaughtered more than 50 percent of hens in the past four months. Households have about 9.5 million hens at present, compared with almost 20 million in September 2005. <\/p>\n

Moldova is the only state in the region where the avian influenza was not discovered until now.
