Moldova’s leadership, foreign ambassadors in Chisinau and the National Academic Folk Dance Band Joc danced a reel in the Chisinau downtown on the 15th anniversary of independence of Moldova celebrated on August 27. <\/p>\n

Thousands of Moldovans participated Sunday in cultural manifestations in Chisinau, which culminated with a concert performed by the music band Zdob si Zdub and fireworks. <\/p>\n

Cultural manifestations dedicated to the 15th anniversary of independence of Moldova took place in localities of the republic on August 27. In Chisinau, the Day of the Republic began with a Te-Deum held by Bishop of Chisinau and Whole Moldova Vladimir and a team of priests from the Metropolitan Cathedral in the capital to the remembrance of those killed for the independence and territorial integrity of Moldova. Taking part in the ceremony was also the chief of state, who laid down flowers later at the monument of Stefan cel Mare si Sfant and at the monument of heroes killed for the independence and integrity of Moldova at the Memorial Complex Eternitate. <\/p>\n

The president praised the participants in battles for the territorial integrity of the county, thanked them sincerely for their patriotism and self-sacrifice for the future of Moldova. He invited people to support firmly and courageously the efforts of authorities, of entire society for building a developed, prosperous, democratic and European state. <\/p>\n

Also on Sunday, the Pantelimon Halippa street opened after reconstruction and a memorial stone honouring the known politician, publicist and man of letters was unveiled in presence of the chief of state. The Independentei street in the Botanica district of Chisinau opened, a memorial stone dedicated to the 15th anniversary of independence of Moldova was unveiled and the monument Columna lui Traian was inaugurated on Sunday. <\/p>\n

Three babies born on Sunday received birth certificates from the chief of state while those born on August 27, 1991 got gifts from authorities. <\/p>\n

The chief of state addressed a festive meeting dedicated to the 15th anniversary of independence prior to the Day of the Republic. He said that though people were not unanimous 15 years ago regarding the meaning of independence and sovereignty, the state of things has changed meanwhile. "Our nation has demonstrated that it deserves to be a people with own statehood, that August 27, 1991 was not an accidental caprice of history, but a provocation imposed by the power of law to fulfil a new mission of citizen." <\/p>\n

According to the chief of state, the most difficult moments had passed, while "Moldova has affirmed itself as a society, as an economy, as a country with own profile which cannot be confounded, not only as a simple state." He highlighted the merits of first presidents Mircea Snegur and Petru Lucinschi in building the state. Also, Voronin proposed that the lawmakers of the Supreme Soviet of the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic who had adopted the Declaration on Independence enjoy the same rights as Moldovan parliamentarians do. <\/p>\n

"If our formal independence has dropped like from the sky, our real independence is the fruit of our work, of our union in front of various challenges, threats and attempts. It was due to the fact that our nation has always known and was aware that the country’s fate was in its hands, at all stages of development as a state," the president underlined. "I equal our independence and European democracy, statehood and democracy, progress and democracy," the chief of state emphasised. <\/p>\n

He underlined the importance of reintegrating the state and stressed that the oneness of Moldova consists of "its open nature, its capacity of making new friends without losing the old ones."
