"All of us are experiencing the sincerest and lightest feelings, for we are all 15 years old today", President Vladimir Voronin stated Saturday night at an official meeting convened on the occasion of the Republic of Moldova’s 15th independence anniversary. <\/p>\n

"We are young and energetic. We build plans, and we see new perspectives. We are the entire Moldova of ours, our entire people who embarked 15 years ago on the hardest and unpredictable-most, but the most perspective way of free, independent, democratic development", he said. <\/p>\n

The President reminded that 15 years ago, not all here were unanimous in their ideas about what independence, sovereignty, and civil freedoms were. <\/p>\n

"But it is essential that we have acquired unity in our risky movement toward a grand and noble objective – the building of Moldova as a country. And we can state with confidence now that we have won a victory on this path! We have proved that we deserve being a nation with its own statehood, that August 27, 1991 was not a casual caprice of history but an obligate invitation to a new civil mission", Voronin said. <\/p>\n

He advised that the awful political earthquake, which took place 15 years ago in the vast former Soviet Union, has remained in the past, and "the panic, chaos and fierce struggle of irreconcilable ideas calling us to this or that past, have sunk in oblivion. The country nowadays lives striving for the future time and for new ideas that are inseparable from the very name of Moldova’s". <\/p>\n

\"\"In his words, the image of a successful country, which Moldova is exactly becoming, is one for all: "This is a European country of high social standards and broad freedoms, a country of high economic dynamics and cultural growth. Today, we have the right to dream of such country, and we have such a possibility, because I guess the hardest and dramatic-most pages in the chronicle of state building are over. Moldova has settled as a state!", emphasized the President. <\/p>\n

Reviewing the years of independence, Voronin said that many things are seen differently today. Each step – the shaping of national legislation, of own monetary system, armed forces and external policy – "was a step of a great novelty, powerful creativity, and incomparable responsibility. Would it be fair of us to put forward claims to the quality of those decisions? On the contrary, I think we must express a sincere gratitude to all those who were brave enough to take that unknown and risky road, among whom were our first two Presidents – Mircea Snegur and Petru Lucinschi". <\/p>\n

Voronin said Moldova and its citizens had to learn much and fast, "so we naturally committed plenty of mistakes, including tragic ones. But we were equally quick to learn lessons from the mistakes. Yes we are still suffering the consequences of the Transnistria conflict. But many have forgotten by now that the conflict – in its acutest form of a fratricidal standoff – lasted only one month. But that time was enough to our people to imprecate war and any military ambitions and to understand that nation’s unity can only be achieved if the principles of democracy, tolerance and superiority of law are observed". <\/p>\n

He called European integration "an all-nation idea", and a democratic and peaceful reunification of Moldova – "a sacred duty". <\/p>\n

"We know European integration is not just a mechanical accession to the European Union. Having taken this path, we realize that advancement to Europe is, first and foremost, an economic modernization and the building of a fair, democratic and developed state", explained the President. <\/p>\n

In his words, the Transnistrian conflict settlement "is not a political re-conquest but a reintegration, an inclusion of over half a million our compatriots into the full-bodied public, social, economic and political life. These are measures to be taken for social rehabilitation of the people who have got used to living in the conditions of misinformation and of a virtual besieged fortress. These are firm state guarantees to all Transnistrian friends that the country reunification is a consolidation of the country, not at all new losses or a new cycle of disunity. And, finally, this is serving the duty to the memory of those who fell victim to this conflict, who, unlike many living people, were deprived of the possibility to undergo the above-mentioned political and psychological evolution, and who are now not able to offer a hand to their fellow countrymen living on the other side of the Dniester River". <\/p>\n

As he put it, "Moldova is now at the crossroads of the most fruitful contacts of civilizations… Perhaps that is why we do not suffer xenophobia or isolationism, and our road to Europe we regard as a logical consequence of not only partnership relations with Brussels and Washington, but also as a result of our centuries-long friendship with Russia". <\/p>\n
