The Galati border police have confiscated 14 tons of chewing gum worth over 100,000 dollars imported from the Czech Republic to be smuggled to Moldova, according to Mediafax. <\/p>\n

Bogdan Carp, spokesman for the Galati County Border Police Inspectorate (IJPF), said Monday that the chewing gum was confiscated after the border police have verified the activity of a U.S. firm which was performing customs operations in the Galati Free Zone. <\/p>\n

"The chewing gum worth approximately 109,000 dollars was imported from the Czech Republic in Romania, it was sold to other firms in the Free Zone and it was transited later to Moldova for a much lower price," Carp added. <\/p>\n

Moldovan nationals Alexandru C., 33 years old, and Dumitru T., 58, were involved in this business. "They have presented false warrants and they were illegally applying the stamp of the firm which stopped working in March 2006 when they carried out customs operations," Carp noted. <\/p>\n
