Higher fines will be in effect for chicken enterprises. Their owners will have to pay a fine of 120 minimal salaries (2,160 lei), if they leave their fowls outside of farms. <\/p>\n

The penalties will be applied in line with the Moldovan Code of Administrative Contraventions and they are part of the action plan against bird flu, Dumitru Erhan, director of the state veterinary inspectorate, told a seminar on launching of a bird flu prevention project on Friday. <\/p>\n

"The risk of appearance of a bird flu hotbed in Moldova is increasing at the same time with migration of birds to the north. Therefore, we have to fine some farmers in order to prevent the disease," the expert explained. <\/p>\n

He admitted that the article on sanctioning of poultry breeders has not been applied until now, though the law took effect a couple of years ago. Many farmers have been prevented until now to isolate their fowls in closed rooms. <\/p>\n

Virusologists from the Moldovan Agrarian University say that starlings will come back to Moldova the next 2-3 weeks and swallows will return in April. They warn that some of these birds spend the winter on the Turkish gorge Dardanele, where many bird flu hotbeds have been discovered. <\/p>\n
