Prosecutor General’s Office stated the extradition proceedings in the case of former deputy mayor of Chisinau municipality Anatol Turcanu, detained on February 8 by Romanian police in Constanta. <\/p>\n

On Thursday morning, First Deputy Prosecutor General Valeriu Gurbulea announced to the media that the extradition proceedings were initiated, refusing yet to make any other comments on this case. <\/p>\n

Alexei Barbarosie, lawyer of Anatol Turcanu, told our reporter the Defense is preparing the necessary documents to present them in court in order to change the form of arrest. <\/p>\n

“Criminal prosecution bodies possess an arrest warrant on the name of Turcanu issued in 2003. This mandate will be put into force immediately after the accused is being extradited to Moldova. In our opinion, Turcanu must not be kept under arrest as he does not represent a public danger,” the lawyer said. <\/p>\n

The lawyer told he was contacted by Turcanu’s wife after his client had been arrested. <\/p>\n

Anatol Turcanu is accused of use of forgery, misuse of authority, embezzlement of 3,750,000 lei from “Apa-Canal Chisinau” Company. He is also accused of complicity in Constantin Becciev case and illegal use of securities. <\/p>\n

Before being announced internationally wanted in 2003, the criminal prosecution bodies familiarized the former deputy mayor with the counts. Anatol Turcanu committed himself not to leave the country. <\/p>\n

But in April 2003 Anatol Turcanu was seen at one of the luxurious health resorts in Romania. After months of pursuit Romanian police caught him in the apartment of his daughter, on the bank of the Black Sea. <\/p>\n

Anatol Turcanu fielded his candidacy in the spring 2005 parliamentary elections, on behalf of the Democratic Moldova Block (BMD). He did not take an MP mandate as BMD won 34 seats in the Parliament, while he ranked 36. \/\/ Reporter.MD<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
