Europe begins to correspond to its name “the old continent”. Demographic forecasts for the next decades show a decline in the number of the population by 2050. According to the European Statistical Office Eurostat, on 1 January 2006 the European Union counted 461.5 million citizens. <\/p>\n

The number of the population will increase slowly in the next fifteen years, reaching 469.2 million inhabitants in 2020, Romanian paper “Averea” (Wealth) quotes Eurostat. Statisticians forecast a EU population of 450.0 million by 2050, a figure smaller than that registered on 1 May 2004. <\/p>\n

The countries that will register an increase in the number of population until 2050 are Luxemburg, Ireland, Cyprus, Malta, Sweden, France, the UK, the Netherlands, and Belgium.
