 Valeriu Pasat, former defence minister of Moldova and former director of the domestic security service SIS, was sentenced to 10 years of detention in semi-close penitentiary and was deprived of the right to hold administrative posts for five years. <\/p>\n

Pasat’s lawyer Gheorghe Amihalachioaie has told journalists that he is firmly sure that this sentence "is an exercising of a state political command." "I thought that the lawsuit was delayed in favour of the defendant and I did not want to tell my opinion, but now I can say that this is an illegal sentence." <\/p>\n

The court judgment can be contested in the Court of Appeal within 15 days. <\/p>\n

Amihalachioaie noted that he will contest the judgment, but he is sure that the Court of Appeal would not change the sentence for defendant and he would have to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights and he is optimistic over a positive judgment for Pasat. <\/p>\n

The police held Pasat at the Chisinau International Airport on March 11 for sale of 21 MIG-29 aircraft. The Prosecutor-General’s Office said that the Moldovan budget had lost tens of millions dollars after this transaction, which took place in 1997, when Pasat was defence minister. <\/p>\n

Pasat was also accused of misuse of authority.
