At least 200 hens have perished in the village of Crihana Veche, the Cahul district, in a couple of days and villagers are alarmed, though veterinary doctors assure that this is not a signal of existence of bird flu. "Some persons suppose that this is a bird flu hotbed, while others believe the diagnosis given by veterinary doctors – pasteurillosis," BASA learned from Ecaterina Olteanu, who said that 150 hens of her own have perished. <\/p>\n

The woman noted that many villagers have burned the dead birds of fear not to be infected with the "unidentified virus" and cut most of livings birds in order to conserve or freeze them. <\/p>\n

Farmers are afraid of eventual bird flu because the village is located near the Danube river and Romanian authorities have discovered several hotbeds in its delta. Even more, the Manta lake is located near their village and birds of passage that carry this virus may stop there. <\/p>\n

Contacted by BASA, Pentelei Rusu, veterinary doctor of the Cahul district, said that pasterellosis has killed the birds in Crihana Veche, and this diagnosis was established at the laboratory in Chisinau. The expert denied that "hundreds of fowls" have died. He said that tens of birds have perished there. The pasteurellosis killed them because of low immunity caused by wrong nutrition. <\/p>\n

The Romanian news agency MEDIAFAX quoted the Moldovan deputy minister of agriculture and food industry, Anatol Spivacenco, as saying in Piatra Neamt, Romania, on Thursday that Moldova is not completely ready to detect and take concrete measures in order to localise the bird flu. According to a protocol signed between Moldova and Romania, some tests will be carried out at laboratories in Romania, if any suspicions of bird flu are signalled in Moldova. <\/p>\n

The bird flu was confirmed in Moldova’s neighbours Ukraine and Romania. Therefore, the authorities intensified the veterinary controls at the border, installing 11 veterinary control stations at the border with Ukraine last week.
