On January 10, officers of the Transfrontier and Information Offense Department detained a minibus carrying 2.5 tonnes of frozen beef to the value of 83,000 lei smuggled from Transdniestria, press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs informs. The smuggled meat was brought into Moldova through the customs post Criuleni 14. <\/p>\n

The meat is produced in Brazil and is part of a bigger batch imported into Transdniestria from Ukraine, investigators say. The meat was to be introduced into Moldova in small quantities. <\/p>\n

Mihai Crichean, the meat owner, had no documents confirming merchandise’s origin and no import documents. <\/p>\n

Legal action was taken on this case on the basis of art. 248 (5) of the Penal Code (smuggling), which stipulates three to ten years in jail. <\/p>\n
