Moldovan education workers have not given up intention to embark on mass-scale actions of protest if the authorities fail to keep their promise to increase salaries to teachers by 40 percent. <\/p>\n

Initially, the teachers’ trade unions were going to commence strikes in late December 2005 because the Government had not kept its word to step up salaries from November 1. However, shortly before the New Year, the Parliament passed a corresponding Law, which has not been published in Monitorul Oficial governmental paper until now, so it has not come into force. <\/p>\n

Deputy Chairperson of the Trade Union of Education and Scientific Workers Mrs. Nadezhda Lavric said teachers have decided to wait until the Law publication. But if the document is not put into force during January, teachers’ strikes shall begin already in February. <\/p>\n

Education workers and their unions have strong apprehensions least the salary growth should be purely symbolic. <\/p>\n

Lavric presumes that "most probably, salaries will be increased more or less substantially only to beginning teachers who presently receive some 400 lei (about $33) a month. For the bulk of the teachers’ corps having salaries around 1 thousand lei a month, the increment will hardly exceed 200 lei, which is but a mockery. Even with that ‘gift’, the teachers’ salaries will be much inferior to the average pay size in the republic". <\/p>\n
