CHISINAU, 21 June 2006 – A three-week training session organized by the OSCE Mission to Moldova to teach police officers and prosecutors about proactive investigations into human trafficking will conclude tomorrow. <\/p>\n

The class featured a simulated criminal investigation of a trafficking case, with four Moldovan actors playing the roles of the victim, the recruiters and the trafficker. The exercise taught participants skills to use when uncovering and analyzing trafficking crimes. Participants also learnt about effective use of evidence, how to properly interview trafficking victims and how to interrogate suspected criminals. <\/p>\n

The mission carried out similar training in February 2005, but this time, 10 participants were trainers who will share their new skills with other officers. <\/p>\n

Josh Court, an OSCE law enforcement trainer from the United Kingdom, said he noted that the Moldovan officers now had a different attitude towards victims as compared to last year’s training session. <\/p>\n

"Instead of interrogating the victim like a common criminal, the police officers responded with greater sensitivity and empathy," he said. <\/p>\n

The OSCE Mission invited Sergiu Purcica, a police officer in the Interior Ministry’s Special Missions Department, to participate as a national law enforcement trainer alongside the two international teachers to ensure that the education fitted a Moldovan context. <\/p>\n

In a closing ceremony to be held tomorrow in Chisinau, the Head of Mission, Ambassador William Hill, will hand certificates to the 18 participants from the Interior Ministry, the Police Academy and the General Prosecutor’s Office. <\/p>\n

The Deputy Head of the new Centre for Trafficking in Persons, Mr. Ion Bejan, and the Deputy Rector of the Police Academy, Mr. Valeriu Cusnir, also will attend the ceremony. <\/p>\n
