Moldova calls on foreign donors to provide equipment to prevent, identify and, if necessary, isolate the bird flu virus. Agriculture and Food Minister Anatolie Gorodenco today unveiled the list of technical assistance, amounting to 4.2 million lei (274,000 euros), during a meeting with eventual donors. <\/p>\n

Gorodenco said that equipment is needed to endow Moldovan services and laboratories of profile. The list includes mobile equipment to conduct disinfections, sets to take samples and containers to airtight the birds. <\/p>\n

The minister said that no bird flu case has been unearthed in Moldova. All the 1,700 tests made on birds in order to discover the virus are negative. Gorodenco said that the Moldovan government has approved an action plan to prevent bird flu. <\/p>\n

Representatives of foreing structures accredited in Chisinau which participated in the meeting – UNDP Moldova, CNFA, UNICEF – familiarised with the list. Most of them said they undertook actions to inform the population on the danger the bird flu virus represents. <\/p>\n

UNICEF project manager Lilia Turcan said that jointly with the Health Ministry they will conduct an information campaign, which sees TV and radio spots, posters and even materials for school teachers. These will include messages on the danger, precaution mechanisms in case of bird flu. <\/p>\n

Until present, Moldova has benefited from the European Commission’s assistance, which allocated about 300,000 euros to endow the republican Centre of Veterinary Diagnosis with a specialized laboratory and over 30,000 euros to organize a simulacrum for the liquidation of a bird flu hotbed.
