The National Health Insurance House (CNAM) intends to purchase several hundreds of dozes of preparations against bird flu in the nearest future, Gheorghe Rusu, chairman of CNAM, told Wednesday at the meeting of the parliamentary commission for social protection, health and family. CNAM will buy about 45,000 dozes of anti-flu vaccines. <\/p>\n

According to the Parliament’s press service, only such preparations as Tamiflu and Relenza are globally recognized as efficient against bird flu. There is no vaccine against the lethal H5N1 strain at present. <\/p>\n

Ion Bahnarel, head of the Scientific-Practical Center of Preventive Medicine, told the members of the commission that no cases of bird flu were reported so far in Moldova. Yet, measures are being taken to prevent a possible bird flu outbreak. Quarantine is being introduced on an area of 3 to 10 kilometers and the birds from the respective settlement are being culled. There were purchased 24 special costumes. Bahnarel specified that the national specialists can do at the moment only preliminary tests for the identification of the bird flu virus that are afterwards sent to the UK, Germany and France for confirmation. <\/p>\n

The commission urged the Ministry of Health and Social Protection to intensify the information campaign as regards the risks of bird flu. <\/p>\n

According to the World Health Organization, the H5N1 virus was discovered in Hong Kong in 1997. In 2003 and in 2005 there were reported several outbreaks, including in Russia and Romania.
