No bird flu cases have been confirmed in Moldova, Ion Bahnarel, chief of the Centre of Preventive Medicine, told the parliamentary commission for social protection, health and family. <\/p>\n

Bahnarel noted that the Health Ministry has already coordinated with competent institutions and local public authorities a series of measures aimed to identify eventual cases of bird flu. He indicated among others the introduction of quarantine on 3-10 kilometres and burning of fowls in the area were bird flu cases would be registered. The Health Ministry has bought 24 special costumes and will distribute them in the entire territory of Moldova. <\/p>\n

According to Bahnarel, national specialists can take only preventive tests regarding identification of bird flu, and they will transmit them later for confirmation to the United Kingdom, Germany or France. <\/p>\n

Gheorghe Rusu, chairman of the National Health Insurance House (CNAM(, said that his institution will shortly purchase hundreds of doses of preparations against bird flu. "Only two preparations are recognised at the world level as efficient against bird flu – Tamiflu and Relenza – and there is no vaccine against virus H5N1, but only a vaccine is being tested in Hungary," Rusu underlined. <\/p>\n

Rusu noted that CNAM would purchase about 45,000 doses of anti-flu vaccine. He informed the parliamentary commission that no pharmacy in Moldova holds authorisations to sell anti-fly vaccines. <\/p>\n

The commission recommended the Ministry of Health and Social Protection to intensify the campaign aimed to inform people about bird flu risks and to control the sale of anti-flu vaccines. <\/p>\n

According to data of the World Health Organisation, the bird flu virus H5N1 was discovered for the first time in Hong Kong in 1997.
