\"\"The Institute for Public Policy (IPP) in cooperation with the Institute for Marketing and Sociological Studies Inc (IMAS) of Moldova have launched the project “Ethno Barometer-Moldova” that aims at monitoring and assessing the relations between the ethnic communities living in Moldova. <\/p>\n

The survey covered five ethnic groups: Moldovans\/Romanians (822), Russians (412), Ukrainians (413), Bulgarians (431) and Gagauzians (472). <\/p>\n

The survey shows the interethnic climate is characterized by tensions between Russians and Moldovans. Each ethnic group differently perceives the reality, perception that differs according to the level of education, place of residence and belonging to a group or another. <\/p>\n

The results indicate Moldovans’ civic identification is weakly shaped and although they are the majority as regards the number, they are the minority from the point of view of conceptions and social capital. <\/p>\n

Poverty is the major problem. It is followed by corruption, traffic in women and tense relations with Transdniestria. <\/p>\n

Asked to compare themselves with other ethnic groups, the Russians said they are intelligent, the Gagauzian people used very few negative qualities as regards themselves, while the Bulgarians considered the others more civilized. <\/p>\n

The Moldovans cannot say they are united, as opposed to the Russians, Ukrainians and Gagauzians. On the other hand they say they are industrious and hospitable. <\/p>\n

Representatives of the majority ethnic group cannot agree on their common identity. The results of the poll show 95 percent consider themselves Moldovans, while five percent – Romanians. <\/p>\n

Moldovans are of the opinion that 15 years ago their relations with the Russian community were better. Russians also agree their relations with Moldovans are worse at present. <\/p>\n
