In the framework of the European Commission Food Security Programme, the EC has transferred to the Moldova’s State Budget 1.2 million euros (18.1 million lei equivalent). <\/p>\n

The Programme is aimed at combating chronic poverty, rendering assistance to socially vulnerable population groups, and at the development of agriculture considered as one of the driving forces for the Moldova national economy development. <\/p>\n

Last April 7, the European Commission and the Government of the Republic of Moldova signed Financial Agreement on providing a 9.2 million euros grant in Budget support to be furnished in 3 installments. <\/p>\n

The first of them, the 1.2 million euros in question, has now come – without whatever conditions. The second and third ones, totaling 8 million euros, will be reviewed this month, and if an agreement is reached on the progress of the Government’s reform agenda, these will be transferred later this year, the Delegation of the European Commission to Moldova reported. <\/p>\n

Prime Minister Vasily Tarlev told a news conference here today that this first installment is a big event for Moldova as the European Commission Food Security Programme is one of the first concrete steps to realization of the EU-Moldova Action Plan and of the Economic Growth and Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (EGPRSP). <\/p>\n

He said the next 2 installments, 4 million euros each, will be available on certain conditions, "and we shall spare no effort to meet them and receive the means before the end of this year". <\/p>\n

In the opinion of Mr. Cesare de Montis, the Head of the Delegation of the European Commission to Moldova, since the adoption of the Food Security Programme last spring, Moldova has achieved considerable success in many spheres, which, in his opinion, is indicative of professionalism of specialists working in Moldovan ministries, and of an efficient cooperation between Moldova and the European Commission. <\/p>\n

Amb. Cesare de Montis said he would devote next 3 weeks to working with the Moldovan Government to solve the question of furnishing the remaining 2 installments. These means will be used to obtain equipment for local (territorial) treasuries, finance alternative childcare services, finance the testing of the payment mechanism of nominal compensations, and in the farm sector – for artificial insemination, animals healthcare control, fulfillment of the vaccination program, and other. <\/p>\n
