\"\"The Consumers’ Protection Association (CPA) will sue the municipal City Hall and the Private Transporters Association for not reacting to the problems concerning the rights of minibus passengers. <\/p>\n

Petru Gutul, head of the association, stated at a pres conference on Thursday that “though there were discovered 30 minibuses that violate passengers’ rights, the Chisinau City Hall did not withdraw the licenses of the respective minibuses yet.” According to him, over 140,000 lei were stolen overall from May 2004 till May currently because of the big crushes in minibuses. The thefts declared by the minibus passengers during the last four years total about 500,000 lei. The source said that the drivers are to blame for this situation because the minibuses are overcrowded. <\/p>\n

In the same connection, Gutul stated that the minibus drivers do not give tickets to the passengers. Thus, in case the passengers are victims of a traffic accident they cannot prove they used a certain minibus. <\/p>\n

According to official accounts, 153 traffic accidents with minibuses’ involvement occurred in the first eight months of the current year. They resulted in 4 dead persons and another 123 traumatized. <\/p>\n

As regards the protests of the minibus drivers, Gutul said that there are too many “masters” to one minibus so that the driver must pay certain “duties” to the City Hall, to CPA, as well as to the minibus owner. Moreover, Gutul specified, many minibus routes belong to senior officials, including MPs and party members. <\/p>\n

All the attempts of agency’s reporter to ask the opinion of municipal councilor Ion Mamaliga, chairman of the Private Transporters Association, about the accusations brought by the Consumers’ Protection Association have failed. <\/p>\n

The route administrators arrested the circulation of minibuses on October 4 calling a passive strike until the local public authorities make a decision in their favor. Transporters demand the tariffs to be increased up to 3 lei. <\/p>\n
