As a result, most of city residents had to travel by taxi, so that not to be late at work. However, thousands who could not afford the taxi tariffs were late because buses and trolleys were very full and travelled with delay. <\/p>\n

Transporters started protests because the higher tariff issue was not included in the agenda of the Tuesday sitting of CMC. <\/p>\n

"A part of drivers did not go to work, others remain at terminus stations, and another part travels," Ion Mamaliga, chairman of the association of private transporters, said. He noted that no data on number of minibuses which do not travel on Tuesday were available so far. <\/p>\n

Earlier, private transporters had warned that they could protest against refusal of municipal councillors to increase the price of tickets. Transporters claim that they suffer high losses after the price of fuels has grown. The price of oil products rose by over 50 percent this year, while the cost of tickets remained unchanged. <\/p>\n

CMC turned down on September 23 a request to increase the transportation tariffs in minibuses by 50 percent, from 2 up to 3 lei, and created a commission to make an additional analysis of the need of higher prices. <\/p>\n

Councillors invoked different reasons against higher transportation tariffs. Some of them showed puzzle over proposal to increase only the tariffs for minibus tickets, without introducing higher prices of tickets in buses, “since both of them use fuel.” Others invoked political reasons. <\/p>\n
