The capital city’s Municipal Education Department is going to request the Municipal Council to allocate extra 10 million lei to provide free hot lunches to junior schoolchildren. <\/p>\n

According to a governmental Resolution, starting from this academic year all schoolchildren of forms 1 to 4 must be provided with free-of-charge hot lunches at school. Presently, available financing is enough to ensure meals worth only 1.5 lei ($0.11) a day, which is indeed very little, if not to say this is actually a waste of means, when money is spent but children remain hungry. <\/p>\n

Department Director Alexandru Roman explained at the Chisinau Municipality’s weekly meeting today that a decision was recently taken to increase the daily "food budget" to 3 lei per capita and to provide hot meals to pupils at only a half of Chisinau schools. The Government cannot agree to such segregation and is demanding to provide food for all, like is the practice at all Moldovan schools outside Chisinau. <\/p>\n

Currently, 31 school-age boys and girls living in Chisinau do not go to classes. Twelve months ago, that figure was standing at 64. The halving of this pitiful indicator was thank to efforts taken, and is still being taken, jointly by the Municipal Education Department and police – meetings with parents, explanations, persuading, insistence, and so forth.
