The European Court of Human Rights will examine the case “Larisa Manole and others versus Moldova” in open trial in December currently. The petitioners’ lawyers and representatives of the Moldovan Government will discuss the claim’s substantiation and admissibility in Strasbourg. <\/p>\n

Vitalie Nagacevschi, the lawyer of the petitioners who are members of the Strike Committee from Moldova 1 TV channel (TVM), told REPORTER.MD that the case “Larisa Manole and others versus Moldova” is the third case submitted to the Court in Strasbourg by Moldovan citizens which is examined in open trial. The first two cases were “Bassarabian Metropolitan Church versus Moldova” and “Ilie Ilacu and others versus Moldova”. <\/p>\n

“The TVM Strike Committee’s petition is very important for the Republic of Moldova as it ariss many questions regarding the application of the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms in Moldova. The verdict on this case will serve as generator for a new jurisprudence in our country,” Nagacevschi mentioned. <\/p>\n

The petition signed by Larisa Manole, Viorica Bogatu-Cucereanu, Corina Fusu, Angela Arama, Mircea Surdu, Diana Donica, Ludmila Vasilache, Dinu Rusnac, and Leonid Melnic, all employees of the National Television, was submitted to ECHR in 2002. The signatories ask for the recognition of the violation by the Republic of Moldova of the right to free expression by imposing censorship on the National Television. <\/p>\n

Contacted by REPORTER.MD, Mircea Surdu, head of the Strike Committee, voiced hope that the trial will prove that the things are not happening in vain. “Our case will be an example for other media institutions that will be willing to fight for the defense of the right to free expression,” he said <\/p>\n
