\"\"Russia, Ukraine and other former Soviet republics have emerged as new epicenters of the global HIV\/AIDS pandemic, registering the world’s fastest growing rates of new infection.  <\/p>\n

Independent experts estimate that up to 1.5 million Russians and Ukrainians may be infected.  If current trends persist, epidemiologists warn that 14 million Russians and Ukrainians could be infected within a decade, reflecting an adult prevalence rate of 10 percent.  The potential for HIV to impact the economy is especially severe because the disease is now growing fastest among the general population. The World Bank estimates Russia may well sacrifice some 4% of its GDP to HIV by the end of this decade.   <\/p>\n

In Moldova things apparently are different. According to the UNAIDS’ report of September 2004, there were some 5500 people infected with HIV\/AIDS in Moldova last year. But this official figure could be misleading. <\/p>\n

The large scale of labor migration increases the possibility of infection. Figures vary but there could be around 600,000 Moldovans working abroad. Since over 90 per cent of the persons infected with HIV\/AIDS are aged 15-39 years old and this is exactly the age of most migrants, this could be a cause for increasing the percentage of HIB\/AIDS infected in Moldova. <\/p>\n

Global Initiative on HIV\/AIDS and Education (EDUCAIDS) is exploring possibilities of launching a project for Moldova. EDUCAIDS is planning to come to Chisinau before the end of 2005 to meet UNAIDS partners in order to identify the strategic areas in which foreign aid is most needed. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
