As many as 850-950 Moldovan women get ill with mammary cancer and about 500 die of this in Moldova annually. <\/p>\n

Larisa Linga, main specialist at the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, told the press on Thursday that the main causes of the high death rate for breast cancer are the lack of information, delayed visits to the doctor, the stress, and the precarious economic-financial situation. <\/p>\n

Ms Linga says 861 women had mammary cancer in 2004. This is 23.2% of all the types of cancerous tumors. 7.3% had I degree cancer, 23% – II degree cancer, and 15% – III degree cancer. Women aged 45-49 are more vulnerable to cancer. <\/p>\n

According to Ms Linga, the breast cancer death rate is on the increase. In 2004, it increased by 4.8% compared to 1990. “The mammary cancer is curable if it is discovered and cured in time. But Moldova’s population avoids consulting the doctor because of financial constraints or because the consultation is inconvenient for them,” specified Ms Linga. <\/p>\n

Angela Arama, MP, stated that the Metropolitan Bassarabian Church offers consultation free of charge. It has a special machine for tracing mammary cancer. The service is intended for women from villages that come from vulnerable families or have a bad financial situation that does not permit them to consult a doctor periodically.” <\/p>\n
