A team of archeologists from the Higher Anthropology School in Chisinau has completed the first large-scale diggings in a 14th-century city in Moldova, near the village of Costesti. <\/p>\n

The expedition members found graves where people buried there are positioned with the head to Mecca, and this confirms the presence of Muslim religion in the area, the school said on its Website. <\/p>\n

They also found 250 coins of Mongol origin and one Moldovan coin stamped by ruler Alexandru the Good, many ceramics and metal items, household objects. The city had had a complicated infrastructure, including a drinking water pipe that ran through the entire city and can even be used today. There are also signs of a highly developed pottery industry. <\/p>\n

It is believed that the city was controlled by Khan Gianibek, who ruled the Crimea peninsula in 1342-1357. According to some historians, the economy and population of the city began declining in connections with the increasing clashes with Christians. <\/p>\n

The city covers a 450-hectare valley near the Botna river. The settlement is known since 1938, but the monuments related to the Muslim population were neglected.
