Gheorghe Amihalachioae told the press that one of the last witnesses for the defense, Viorel Cibotaru, who in 1997 was acting as head of the Foreign Policy Department in the Ministry of Defense, was examined on Thursday. <\/p>\n

Mr. Amihalachioae says Mr. Cibotaru has given details on the contract of selling-purchasing the MIG-29 jet fighters, “this transaction being of major importance for Moldova, at a time when the contest for these planes on the world markets had been harsh”. <\/p>\n

“Mr. Cibotaru’s detailed testimony proves once again that Valeriu Pasat is not guilty,” Mr. Amihalachioae added. <\/p>\n

The cited source said that a new witness, Ion Ursu, the head of the Information and Security Service, is to be heard on Friday, as he could not come today. Mr. Ursu is the last witness summoned on this case. Afterwards, the court will hear the accused and the pleadings of the defense and prosecution. <\/p>\n

“As most of the evidence has been already analyzed, I hope that the court will pass its verdict next week”, said Mr. Amihalachioae. <\/p>\n

He has also mentioned that the Pasat case had been made known in many European countries, inclusively in Strasbourg. According to Mr. Amihalachioae, many experts of the Council of Europe are of the opinion that the ex-minister of defense is a victim. <\/p>\n

The ex-minister of defense, Valeriu Pasat, former head of the Information and Security Service, was detained on March 11, 2005 at the Chisinau Airport.
