The Prosecutor-General’s Office of Moldova has filed criminal charges against the municipal emergency situations department in Chisinau, mayors of two Chisinau suburbs, and a terrain management firm over the August floods. <\/p>\n

Prosecutors say the leadership of the department, the mayors of Gratiesti and Stauceni villages, and the manager of the firm Speranta-Gratiesti had neglected their duties. Their negligence, the office said in a press release, led to "dramatic consequences after the rains" that hit central and northern Moldova on August 18 amd 19. <\/p>\n

According to prosecutors, the authorities in Gratiesti and Speranta-Gratiesti had leased the local lakes within their jurisdiction without having the dams repaired – though they were obliged by law to do so. <\/p>\n

In Stauceni, the authorities had failed to take measures to prevent the floods there, the communique reads. <\/p>\n

Meanwhile the emergency situations department of the capital is accused of failing to inspect the terrain and to act appropriately during a crisis. The central city administration of Chisinau must share the responsibility, the prosecutors say. <\/p>\n

According to Valeriu Gurbulea, first deputy to the prosecutor-general, "the wrongdoing falls under the Penal Code." A sentence under these charges means that those convicted will be ordered to pay between 4,000 lei (300 dollars) and 60,000 lei, or to spend up to five years in prison.
