The new academic year in Moldova began on September 1 with a reading about democracy, with top cabinet officials and municipal authorities attending opening ceremonies in the capital. <\/p>\n

In particular, Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev and Alexandru Roman, chief of the municipal department for education, visited the Mihai Cotiubinski Lycee in Chisinau, an official press release reads. <\/p>\n

Parliament Speaker Marian Lupu was present in a boarding school in the Vascauti village, Cimislia district, and Education Minister Victor Tvircun was in the Nicolae Iorga Lycee, Chisinau. <\/p>\n

Moldova started the new academic year with a critical – the government admits – deficit of teachers. At least 2,000 specialists are wanted mainly for subjects of foreign language, mathematics and physics. <\/p>\n

Ministerial officials say all the schools are prepared for the new academic year including those that were damaged by floods and rains on August 18 and 19. <\/p>\n

From September 1, 2005, the students from all pre-university institutions in Moldova will begin to study a new academic subject, called "Education for Life Habits Formation". The new course will be mandatory for students aged between 7 and 16 and it is implemented by the Ministry of Education with the support of UNICEF, of the Global Fund Against AIDS and Tuberculosis, as well as of United Nations Population Fund, the World Bank, and the Swedish Agency for Development. <\/p>\n
