\"\"On August 25, 2005, Moldova officially welcomed the arrival of three European bison (known also as aurochs or wisents) donated by Poland. The bison arrived in Moldova from Bialowieza Forest in Poland just several days before Moldova’s Independence Day on August 27. <\/p>\n

A wisent head is part of Moldova’s national emblem, but the wisent became extinct in Moldova in the late 18th century. <\/p>\n

The Moldovan authorities – president, speaker of parliament, prime-minister and other officials – participated at the welcoming ceremony. "I am proud that my country brought these three wisents back to their historical habitat, said Ierzy Stankiewicz, a Polish diplomat who participated at the event. Reportedly, in 2000, Romania offered several bison to Moldovans, but due to uneasy political relations between Chisinau and Bucharest those days, Moldovans refused to take the gift.<\/p>\n
