{"id":188528,"date":"2005-07-05T18:05:00","date_gmt":"2005-07-05T18:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/new.moldova.org\/2005\/07\/05\/situation-of-moldovan-press-is-worse-than-in-most-of-regions-states-3684-eng\/"},"modified":"2005-07-05T18:05:00","modified_gmt":"2005-07-05T18:05:00","slug":"situation-of-moldovan-press-is-worse-than-in-most-of-regions-states-3684-eng","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.moldova.org\/en\/situation-of-moldovan-press-is-worse-than-in-most-of-regions-states-3684-eng\/","title":{"rendered":"Situation of Moldovan Press Is Worse than in Most of Region\u2019s States"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading Time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p>According to a classification that includes 20 states from South Eastern Europe and Eurasia, the Republic of Moldova takes the 16th position as regards the situation of press, with 1.56 points of 4. <\/p>\n<p>As stated by the media monitoring agency &ldquo;Monitor Media&rdquo;, according to a study made by the International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX) in cooperation with USAID, the main indices evaluating the situation of press in Moldova have degraded. <\/p>\n<p>The study was carried out on the basis of five complex objectives among which the freedom of expression, journalistic quality standards, plurality of news sources, ability to support businesses and supporting institutions. <\/p>\n<p>For each of those 20 states there were drawn up scores and classifications, 4 points being the maximal score. <\/p>\n<p>The countries that scored between 0 and 1 points rank as &ldquo;incapable of supporting mass media and are inimical to the press.&rdquo; A score ranging between 1 and 2 points (the case of Moldova) is given to the countries that fulfill minimally those five objectives. The score of 2-3 points is awarded to the countries that accomplish most of the objectives and that of 3-4 points &ndash; to the countries where there is a free media framework. <\/p>\n<p>Croatia ranks the first with 2.82 points and Uzbekistan the last with 0.64 points. Romania takes the eighth position with 2.24. <\/p>\n<p>As regards freedom of expression, Moldova ranks the 15th with a score of 1.57, this being the lowest index registered since 2001 till 2004. The worst situation in terms of freedom of expression is noticed in Belarus (0.59), the best one &#8211; in Croatia (2.89). <\/p>\n<p>The situation of journalistic quality standards in Moldova is even worse than as regards the freedom of expression. It should be mentioned that in 2001 the journalistic professionalism in Moldova was considered better. <\/p>\n<p>As regards the plurality of news sources, the Republic of Moldova was placed on the 18th position in the classification, registering a score of 1.50. Croatia has the best index (3.00), and Uzbekistan the worst (0.52). The index of our country at this chapter has improved in 2002 (1.43), but worsened compared with the indices registered in 2003 and 2001 (1.74 and respectively 1.78). At the chapter of supporting the business in press, with a score of 1.35, Moldova takes the 16th position among those 20 states. <\/p>\n<p>According to the fifth objective &ndash; institutions that back press &ndash; Moldova register a score of 2.10 and it is placed on the 12th position. It is the only index that places Moldova in the third category of states &ndash; countries that fulfill the majority of objectives.
