The non-governmental organizations of Amnesty International Moldova and Hyde Park are preparing to holding a signature raising campaign near the Organ Hall of Chisinau on June 24 in support of torture victims. It will be dedicated to the International Day in Support of Torture Victims marked annually on June 26. <\/p>\n

Amnesty International Moldova Executive Director Yevgeny Goloshapov told a news conference in Infotag today that the organization has been arranging such campaigns since 2001. This year, signatures will be collected under an appeal to the U.S. administration and personally to President George Bush with a call to bring to responsibility those officials who permitted the using of tortures under the disguise of combating terror. The document authors are also insisting that the U.S. Government should permit UN inspectors to visit prisons. <\/p>\n

Amnesty International Moldova believes, in particular, that the United States ought to release the Republic of Chad national Mohammed S., who has been kept at the U.S. military base in Guantanamo in inhuman conditions for more than 3 years by now. <\/p>\n

On June 24, signatures in Chisinau will be raised also in support of Mr. Saidjahon Zainabitdinov, the Chairman of the "Appeal" human right organization of Uzbekistan, who monitored the recent bloody events in Andijan and was accused of terrorism by the Uzbekistan authorities. <\/p>\n

The news conference was attended also by representatives of the Helsinki Moldova Committee for Human Rights and the "Memoria" center for medical rehabilitation of torture victims. They confirmed that tortures are practiced in Moldova, too. <\/p>\n

Memoria introduced to the news conference 2 young residents of Leova town who fell victims to police arbitrariness. In their words, they were detained by a police patrol in Leova center at night and were delivered to a police station without explanation of reason. There, the guys were subjected to physical tortures for several hours.
