The Transparency International Moldova has come to a conclusion that education is the sphere where informal payments have acquired the country’s widest scale. Such a bad reputation certainly undermines the prestige of the education system as such. <\/p>\n

Lilia Carasciuc, the Executive Director of this non-governmental organization, said that according to a recent opinion poll, only 5.3% respondents, particularly in higher educational institutions, believe that their refusal to bribe teachers will not influence their academic excellence in any way. <\/p>\n

"Nearly one-third of the polled students stated that during 2004 they had given bribes totaling 968 lei, on the average, to their teachers. Proceeding from the size of such ‘gifts’ and their frequency, it was not so difficult to calculate that such ‘unofficial payments’ in the education system total 126 million lei a year", she said. <\/p>\n

This year, Transparency International Moldova has already received a whole number of complains from students stating that their teachers hinted at ‘incentives’ before exams. The complaints came from Cahul University, Chisinau University of medicine and Pharmacology, and some other institutions. <\/p>\n

Carasciuc says, "Corruption at Moldovan educational institutions is not simply illicit and ugly in its essence. It leads to degradation of the country’s ethical and moral fundamentals, to deterioration of education quality and, accordingly, to degradation of the competitiveness of our specialists and workers. If the State fails to undertake resolute measures in this sphere, Moldova may well lose its economic competitiveness on the international market". <\/p>\n

In this connection, Transparency International Moldova has addressed the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, educational institution administrations, and the Center for Combating Organized Crime and Corruption to take measures to put an end to corruption in the education system. \/\/ INFOTAG<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
