If situation in Transnistria does not change for the better, the National Railroad Company of Moldova (CFM) will have to reorganize its traffic scheme in a way to send trains in detour of the separatist Transnistrian region, Moldovan Minister of Transport and Roads Miron Gagauz stated at the news conference today.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, the CFM already changed, for an experiment, the decades-traditional itinerary of the Chisinau-St. Petersburg train, and now it runs not via Bendery and Tiraspol but by using the northern branch – via Balti, Ocnita and further across the Ukraine border.<\/p>\n

"We are forced and are ready to make this step in order to spare our passengers of lots of inconveniences they come across at traveling via Transnistria. I admit that this traffic rearrangement will cause certain difficulties with Ukraine, as some railroad stations there have a limited train handling capacity, but we have no way out. Such conflicts as Transnistrian may drag for decades. Our railroad transport system cannot wait and work in uncertainty for so long", said the Minister. He touched on the other, southern direction of development, and said the construction of the Revaca-Cainari branch [bypassing Bendery station] was advancing at a good pace according to the plan. When the branch is officially commissioned by the end of this year, the way from Chisinau to southern Moldovan raions will become 70 kilometers shorter, and "will kick out of Tiraspol’s hands an instrument of pressure on Chisinau", Miron Gagauz said.<\/p>\n

In August 2004, the separatist authorities declared as the region’s property the entire CFM facilities – railroads, stations, locomotive depots, signal system, etc. – situated in the ‘Transnistrian Moldovan Republic’. Shortly after that, Tiraspol established a unitary enterprise named "Transnistrian Railroad Company", and now demands that Moldovan trains must pay for transit.
