\nPress freedom in Moldova suffered a substantial decline, registering negative category shifts, according to the study "Freedom of the Press 2005: A Global Survey of Media Independence," conducted by the Organization “Freedom House” (FH). <\/p>\n

According to Monitor Media Agency that cites the above-mentioned study, Moldova placed the 137th with a 65-point rating in the study carried out for 194 states of the world. Mauritania ranks the 136th and Zambia – the 138th. <\/p>\n

Among the ex-soviet countries from Central and Eastern Europe, the Republic of Moldova places the 19th. <\/p>\n

According to the FH study, in the ex-soviet space, the press is free only in the Baltic States. Thus, Estonia places the 27th scoring 17 points, and Latvia – the 28th with as many points. Georgia (116) and Ukraine (124) were rated “Partly Free”. In the rest of the CIS countries, the press was rated by FH as “Not Free.” <\/p>\n

Finland, Island and Sweden share the first three positions in the classification made by FH, and the worst–ranked countries are Cuba (192), Turkmenistan (193) and North Korea (194). <\/p>\n

“Freedom House” publishes annually studies which assign each country a numerical score from 0 to 100 that determines a category rating of Free, Partly Free, or Not Free. Ratings are determined by examining three broad categories: the legal environment in which media operate, political influences on reporting and access to information, and economic pressures on content and the dissemination of news. <\/p>\n

The 2005 Report says that while press freedom registered important gains in some key countries in 2004, such as Ukraine and Lebanon, notable setbacks occurred in the United States and elsewhere in the Americas. The numerical score of the US declined due to a number of legal cases in which prosecutors sought to compel journalists to reveal sources or turn over notes or other material they had gathered in the course of investigations. <\/p>\n
