\nMoldovan President Vladimir Voronin and Prime Minister Vasily Tarlev visited the Chisinau Municipality [city’s government] last Saturday to meet its leadership, heads of Chisinau city sectors, directors of municipal departments, services, other officials. <\/p>\n

Voronin stated he had asked to organize that meeting "to establish an efficient mechanism of cooperation between the central executive power organ and the Chisinau city leadership for a better solving of citizens’ problems and ensuring good conditions for city development and modernization". <\/p>\n

Acting Mayor Vasile Ursu said that Municipality subdivisions have defined priority fields that require urgent measures to improve situation in Chisinau. The President demanded from the Government to promptly work out, jointly with the local administration, a complex-like plan of measures needed. <\/p>\n

Vladimir Voronin stressed, the temporary absence of Mayor and the election campaign to start soon should not influence in any way the usual administrative activity in the capital city, or tell anyhow on citizens’ normal life. No matter who the new Mayor will be, the city administration’s tasks remain the same, and they must be fulfilled without effectively, he said. <\/p>\n

The head of state touched on the need to urgently solve such problems as street illumination, repair of multistory apartment houses’ roofs, optimization of the Apa-Canal municipal water compAny, Etc. <\/p>\n

The President highlighted the importance of adopting Law on the status of Chisinau, of accomplishing the drafting of the Chisinau General Development Plan, improving of the legislation on local governance organs. <\/p>\n

"We stand ready to constructive collaboration with the Chisinau city leadership. The confrontation between the city administration and the country’s central authorities, which can be observed lately, brings nothing but harm to both Chisinau citizens and the country as a whole. We must join efforts to build a modern European capital", stated President Voronin. <\/p>\n

As was previously reported by Infotag, the confrontation between the ruling Communist Party and Chisinau Mayor Serafim Urechean had led to cessation of practically any cooperation between the central and municipal authorities. The Chisinau Mayor was withdrawn from the Cabinet complement. He had been in unending conflicts with the Chisinau Municipal Council [city legislature] dominated by the Communists. During the 2003 local election campaign, President Vladimir Voronin openly called upon citizens to vote against Serafim Urechean. However, in the second round of voting, Urechean won a convincing victory over the Communist Party’s candidate Vasile Zgardan. <\/p>\n

After the March 2005 parliamentary elections, Serafim Urechean tendered resignation as Mayor, went to parliament and now heads the opposition Moldova Noastra Alliance faction.
