\"\"The Chisinau Municipal Council will examine on May 17 a proposal of the public transportation and communication directorate of the Chisinau City Hall to introduce higher tariffs for public transport in the Chisinau municipality on June 1. <\/p>\n

Directorate head Veaceslav Tarna told an operative city hall sitting on Tuesday that he will demand the increase of prices of tickets from 0.75 lei up to one leu in trolleys, from 1.25 lei up to two lei in buses, or compensation of losses for passenger transportation from local budget. Also, he will demand the increase of tariffs from two lei up to three lei in minibuses. <\/p>\n

"The public transport is working much under norm of financial needs, and this does not allow its efficient and qualitative functioning. Additional allocations are needed from the municipal budget in order to improve this situation, or the tariffs must be increased immediately," Tarna underlined. He noted that the real cost of a ticket in trolley costs two lei, 3.5-3.9 lei in bus, and 4-5 lei in minibus. <\/p>\n

Contacted by BASA, municipal councillors Ion Mamaliga, chairman of the Association of Private Transporters, said that four commissions of the Chisinau Municipal Council have already given green light to the proposal to increase the tariffs. He expressed conviction that "most of councillors would vote" this decision at the next sitting since "everybody realizes that the transportation system would go bankrupt without this measure." <\/p>\n

Fiodor Negru, chairman of the Communist faction in the Chisinau Municipal Council, said that "introduction of higher tariffs is not the best solution to a normal functioning of the municipal transport." He noted that the Communist faction could back the proposal to increase the tariffs for trolleys and buses, but not for minibuses, since "nor the current tariff orresponds the quality of services." <\/p>\n
