Moldovan trade unions ought to preserve their independence from Government in order to better protect workers’ rights and interests, presumed an International Labor Organization delegation that completed their working visit to Chisinau today. <\/p>\n

Mr. Kari Tapiola, the ILO Executive Director for Human Rights, pointed out during a meeting with Moldovan colleagues that splits like the one continuing in the trade union movement in this republic had been experienced by many countries, "however, Moldovan unions should nonetheless work to unite efforts for the sake of the efficient protection of workers’ interests". <\/p>\n

Mr. Petru Chiriac, the Chairman of the Moldovan Trade Union Federation, explained foreign guests that, so far, whatever cooperation with the "Solidaritatea" Confederation of Independent Trade Unions, an alternative organization, is "impossible and devoid of a perspective". <\/p>\n

"Solidaritatea leaders act as the Government tells them to, and are dependent on the Government’s support. Many our trade unions are in litigation with the Government, and this unending confrontation also hinders our dialog with Solidaritatea. It is impossible to speak about collaboration and equal rights when one organization [the Federation] is independent whereas the other [Solidaritatea] is subordinate to the Government", Petru Chiriac said. <\/p>\n

Solidaritatea Chairman Mr. Leonid Manea pointed out that during the recent parliamentary election campaign here, his Confederation "categorically objected to politicization of the trade union movement". He confessed, however, that Solidaritatea stood up in support of the ruling Communist Party "because its Program was in the interests of workers most of all". <\/p>\n

Mes. Dimitrina Dimitrova, ILO’s Chief Expert in Trade Union Activities, recommended to Moldovan trade unions to maintain a relationship of cooperation with the Government to promote workers’ interests, "but such cooperation should not restrict unions’ independence". <\/p>\n

The above-mentioned split in the Moldovan trade union movement began in 2001 upon the Communist Party’s coming to power.
