The situation of mass media in the Republic of Moldova is marked by the discrepancy between the rights and freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution and their observance, and the freedom of press and of expression is compromised by governors’ tendency to control it and use it as tool in the political fight with the opposition. At the same time, the economic crisis generates mass media’s dependence on supplementary financial sources. In consequence, it is exposed to some editorial intrusions on the part of political parties and governors. <\/p>\n

These conclusions are part of a Memoriam signed by a number of media organizations on the occasion of World Freedom Press Day. <\/p>\n

According to the statement, measures that would guarantee legislation’s perfection and creation of an economic climate favorable for mass media development are necessary in this situation. In this respect, it is proposed to perfect the legal framework, to guarantee the functioning of the laws in force, to apply some economic measures and create equal conditions for the press, as well as to found a Trade Union that would represent and defend journalists’ interests. <\/p>\n

Director of Acces-info Center, Vasile Spinei stated at a press conference that this year the Freedom Press Days would be celebrated differently. "These days are controverted by the current government’s statements and the real situation of the press," said Spinei, referring to the bill on state and professional secret. <\/p>\n

In his turn, director of the Committee for Press Freedom, Alexandru Cantar reiterated the idea of creating a Journalistic Trade Union that would guarantee a higher level of press freedom, taking into account the problems that journalists from Moldova confront now. <\/p>\n

On the other hand, on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, the head of state Vladimir Voronin launched a message stating that "the institutions of the power bank on journalists’ professionalism, spirit of initiative and patriotism, on their capacity to promote the public interest" and urged the journalists "to act together so that democracy to triumph in the Republic of Moldova." <\/p>\n

It should be mentioned that President Vladimir Voronin named among the priorities of the current government "the formation of open, responsible and dynamic mass media", serving all the political, civil and ethno-cultural segments of the society. <\/p>\n

Also on Tuesday, Organization "Reporters without Borders" published a shocking report on violations of press freedom in the world. The document reveals an undesired summing-up of 2004 – 53 journalists killed, 107 imprisoned and 34 heads of state who make an attempt to the press freedom. <\/p>\n

According to the program of Press Freedom Days, in the period of May 3-17, currently there will be organized different seminars and round table meetings on topics of investigative journalism, freedom of expression, defamation, qualitative journalism and democracy, legislative framework.
