\"\"Not more than a quarter of Moldovan nationals observe religious rites and traditions, about two-thirds do this occasionally, and 10 percent Moldovans are totally ignorant about religious customs and traditions, according to an opinion poll carried out recently by the "Opinia" Independent Sociology and Information Service. <\/p>\n

According to that research, nearly 90% of interviewed people stated they regard religion as one of the fundamental values of their everyday life. The number of true worshippers has by now grown up to 75%, against 30% in 1991. <\/p>\n

The poll confirmed the official statistical data indicating that 97% citizens of Moldova are Orthodox Christians, and only 3 percent belong to other religions. The Church is the most popular and the most respected institution of all existing in the country. The level of trust in it (70-75%) is now almost twice higher than in the early 1990s. <\/p>\n

Opinia found out that 86% of the Moldovan populace visits the Church and other religious services. Of them, 19 percent do it once a month, 35% — several times a year, 32% — occasionally, and 14% said they did not go to the Church at all. <\/p>\n
