As many as 1570 primary, middle and secondary schools were functioning in the country at the beginning of the 2004\/2005 year of study. Their number decreased by 6 units if compared to the previous year of study. At the same time, the total number of students attending primary and secondary education comprised 546.6 Th. persons, on the decrease against the previous year by 32.1 Th. persons (-6%). <\/p>\n

Out of them, the number of students from 1-4 and 5-9 forms reduced against the previous year by 7% and, respectively, 5%, and the number of those from 10-11 (12) forms decreased by 2.5 Th. (-3%), show data of the Department of Statistics and Sociology. In 2004, the number of young people that completed the 9-th form remained practically the same as in 2003 and made up 60.2 Th. people. Each second of them continues the studies in the 10-th form in high schools or secondary schools. <\/p>\n

High-school and secondary-school graduates made up 31.4 Th. people. 95% of high-school graduates received the baccalaureate diploma, what offers them priority when applying for higher education. <\/p>\n

According to specialists, one of the factors that influence directly the quality of education is teachers’ qualification. Weight of the teaching staff with higher education remains in the last years at the level of 81%, and their total number in the 2004\/2005 year of study reduced by 4% against the same period of the previous year, comprising 41 Th. people.
