Members of the Broadcasting Coordinating Council (BCC) approved the decision of adopting a new Law on Broadcasting, for the reason that the current law is applied for already 10 years and it became a real obstacle to native broadcasting’s development.<\/p>\n

President of the BCC, Ion Mihailo, stated on Tuesday that a number of changes occurred in the activity of broadcasting institutions during a decade. <\/p>\n

"TV viewers want a wider variety of programs and license holders – a more equitable and less bureaucratic mechanism of license issuing and a juridical framework that would ensure an open and fair competition. These priorities will not be viable if the broadcasting activity is going to be further directed by the old law," underlined Mihailo. <\/p>\n

According to him, the necessity of adopting a new law is determined also by the fact that the Parliament ratified the European Convention on transfrontier television, which obliges national legislation to be adjusted to the European standards and to the new European vector of the Republic of Moldova.<\/p>\n

During the same meeting, BCC members presented a report on BCC’s activity during 2004.<\/p>\n

According to the report, the number of broadcasting institutions increased in the last years, but there are still many problems in terms of quality. Many mass media institutions, especially rural ones, are confronting lack of qualified personnel.<\/p>\n

Mihailo said that he is not contented with the insufficiency of qualified personnel in the makeup of BCC and with the lack of financial sources. According to Mihailo, only 23 persons unfold their activity in the BCC, like in 1996 when the Council was made up.
