President Vladimir Voronin addressed a message of condolence to Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, Dean of the College of Cardinals, where he expressed Moldovan people’s regret at the death of Pope John Paul II. <\/p>\n

The letter of condolence reads: “We found out sorrowfully about the passing away of His Holiness Pope John Paul II. His Holiness enjoyed and will always enjoy profound admiration and special respect in any corner of the world for his noble and remarkable activity devoted to strengthening the peace and understanding between peoples, sowing faith, love and hope in people’s hearts, in the name of common wealth.” <\/p>\n

The head of state expressed his personal regret and passed on the compassion of the entire Moldovan people at this “irrecoverable loss for the whole mankind”. <\/p>\n

The death of Pope John Paul II was officially announced by the Vatican officials on Saturday, at 21.37. Cardinals will meet today to set the funeral date and begin preparations for the election of a new pope.
