A 10-year-long campaign named "Water for Life" has been launched in Moldova as well as all over the world on the initiative of the UN General Assembly. <\/p>\n

On this occasion, Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Constantin Mihailescu convened a news conference today and said that presently, about 1.8 million people in this republic have no access to high-quality potable water. These are overwhelmingly villagers who use water from traditional domestic or communal wells. By the year 2015, over 800 thousand of them are to be provided with quality pipelines and normal potable water meeting all international standards. <\/p>\n

The Minister said the Republic of Moldova is standing on the 64th position on the list of 200 nations by the quality water provision level. No wonder: even in Moldovan cities and towns, only 70% households enjoy running water, and in villages this indicator is next to a zero. <\/p>\n

In Moldova, there exist over 120 thousand water wells, some of which are centuries old. In 80% of them, water quality fails to meet basic ecological or chemical parameters. Approximately the same situation is reported from almost a half of the 3.5 thousand artesian boreholes. <\/p>\n

Moldova annually consumes about 145 million cubic meters of water. However, only less than a half of the populace consumes normal-quality water.
