There is an ongoing pressure upon the Romanian language schools based in the separatist region of Transnistria. These schools subordinate the legitimate Ministry of Education in Chisinau.<\/p>\n

Few weeks ago several men claiming to work for the unconstitutional authorities of Transnistria broke out at “Lucian Blaga” high school from Tiraspol conducting a searching. Few days later several schools received letters from the Transnistrian administration forcing them to pay the income tax to the so-called ministry of finances of Transnistria.<\/p>\n

The same high school was surrounded by barbed wire<\/a> at the end of November.<\/p>\n

Teachers say that such actions come in response to the initialization of the Association Agreement by Moldova with the European Union. The Transnistrian authorities seek to destabilize the situation in the region, determining parents not to send their children to Romanian language schools.<\/p>\n

Romanian is the official language spoken in Moldova. However, most of the schools based in Russia-backed Transnistria teach in Russian.<\/p>\n

Principal Maria Roibu of “Alexandru cel Bun” high school in Bender said that she received a letter on Friday from the fiscal department of the town, being informed that the teachers have to pay income tax to the Transnistrian administration.<\/p>\n

“We pay our tax to the constitutional authorities [based in Chisinau],” Ms. Roibu told Moldova.ORG. “We have been called from the town statistics department, being asked to submit our reports. The separatists use the pupils and Latin-script schools in their dishonorable political games. They use every method to scare pupils and teachers to destabilize the situation.”<\/p>\n

Principal Ion Iovcev of “Lucian Blaga” high school received a similar letter.<\/p>\n

“They want to do everything possible to close these schools,” Mr. Iovcev told Moldova.ORG.<\/p>\n

“We informed the authorities in Chisinau, the OSCE Mission and the Reintegration Bureau. We pay our income tax to the budget of the legitimate authorities of Moldova.”<\/p>\n

Galina Zagorodnaia, who is a teacher at “Lucian Blaga” high school, said she heard on the radio about her “complain” against the high school she works at, which allegedly she would have submitted to the Transnistrian “prosecution court.”<\/p>\n

“I was visiting my mother who lives in Belarus,” Ms. Zagorodnaia told Moldova.ORG.<\/p>\n

“When I returned, there were searchings at school. I have learned about them from the radio “Voice of Bessarabia”. I heard the voice of our principal, telling about that alleged letter. He said on air that he does not believe that I am the one who wrote it. I was shocked.”<\/p>\n

The teachers said she will submit a complaint to the Prosecution Court in Chisinau and will ask her case to be investigated.<\/p>\n

“They falsified my signature,” she said. “I did not write those statements. My family does not have ‘Transnistrian citizenship.’ They say we reside here illegally. They wanted to instill fear.”<\/p>\n

The administration of Tiraspol said that the purpose of their searching at the Latin-script high school based in this city was a complaint submitted by Ms. Zagorodnii about the scarce sanitary conditions, as well as the delay in salary payments.<\/p>\n

Deputy Minister Eugen Carpov and Education Deputy Minister Liliana Nicolaescu-Onofrei had a joint meeting with the “Lucian Blaga” high school administration on December 9th.<\/p>\n

“This pressure violates the pupils’ right to education,” Mr. Carpov said. “They hinder a good performance of the educational process and seek to worsen the situation of these schools.
