U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry paid a historic trip to Moldova on Wednesday afternoon. He arrived in Chisinau to show his country’s support for Moldova’s European integration process.<\/p>\n

His visit is regarded as of utmost importance, since the last trip of a U.S. Secretary of State to Moldova took place in 1992, when then-Secretary James Baker travelled to the newly-established Republic after the collapse of the USSR in 1991.<\/p>\n

During his four hours long stay in Moldova, John Kerry was welcomed by Moldovan Foreign Minister Natalia Gherman and had talks with President Nicolae Timofti, Premier Iurie Leanca, speaker of Parliament Igor Corman, as well as the leaders of the pro-European ruling coalition.<\/p>\n

“We are convinced that any country has the right to make its own choice regarding its development,” John Kerry said. "I am here to affirm to you that the United States will stand with you. We are strongly supportive of what you are trying to achieve. We’ve provided some assistance and we will provide more. And we will continue to work with you on this road to your return, if you will, to this affiliation with Europe."<\/p>\n

Over the last 20 years, the United States provided assistance worth $1.1 billion. Most of the money was spent for strengthening the rule of law.<\/p>\n

According to him, the three-sided format – Moldova, the US, and the EU – offers to Moldova important economic development opportunities.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Iurie Leanca told John Kerry about Moldova’s current political and economic situation and their plans to tackle existing issues. Moreover, the Premier suggested that Moldova and the United States should create an Action Plan to cooperate in realms of mutual interest.<\/p>\n

“With support of our American and European partners, we can create a successful story in the Republic of Moldova,” Iurie Leanca said.<\/p>\n

After the official talks at the state residency in Chisinau, the leadership of Moldova invited John Kerry to Cricova wine cellar, which is the largest in the world. The U.S. Secretary of State participated at the launching of the national wine branding logo called “Wine of Moldova. A legend alive,” having the opportunity to taste a variety of Moldovan wines.<\/p>\n

The American official appreciated the wine, saying that the Moldovan winemaking method originates from Europe, which is another reason why Moldova should strive for a European future, with closer integration with the EU.<\/p>\n

“I am here to congratulate the people of Moldova for initialing an Association Agreement and a Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (DCFTA) with the European Union at the Vilnius Summit last week and to pledge the support of the USA to you as you finalize this agreement over the course of next year,” John Kerry said in a press briefing at Cricova wine cellars.<\/p>\n

He added that his government believes that “European integration is the best road for both the security and prosperity of Moldova.”<\/p>\n

The United States provided over $22 million to help Moldova to prepare for the Association Agreement and the DCFTA.<\/p>\n

The American official explained that having closer ties with the European Union, Moldova will have access to a “diverse and pluralistic set of options in the world.”<\/p>\n

According to Mr. Kerry, his government wants to help Moldova to become less reliable on foreign energy sources. Therefore, over $3.5 million will be invested in local bank capital for energy efficiency projects.<\/p>\n

Moreover, John Kerry stated that a team of top winemakers will travel to the U.S. to meet with American winemakers to exchange experience and knowledge in this field and find opportunities to export wines to the U.S. market.<\/p>\n

Speaking from Washington, D.C., State Department Deputy Spokesperson Marie Harf said in a press conference on Wednesday that the United States “supports Moldova to find new markets,” but she did not say whether their country is ready to accept any wine imports from Moldova yet.<\/p>\n

However, Marie Harf made a joke, saying that she wants him to bring wine for “all of us.”<\/p>\n

“I am sure the Secretary has room to bring some wine,” the spokeswoman said.<\/p>\n

At the end of his speech at Cricova, the U.S. Secretary of State decided to drink some white wine only with the Moldovan Prime Minister.<\/p>\n
