Romania will be the first country to lift visa requirements for Moldovan citizens. The announcement was made by the Head of the Romanian Senate, Crin Antonescu, who is on an official visit to Chisinau.<\/p>\n

According to him, all political elites in Romania have found a common stance on their foreign policy towards Moldova, claiming that their country will continue to be the biggest supporter of Moldova’s European integration process.<\/p>\n

The European Commission submitted a legislative proposal to the European Parliament at the end of November, suggesting the lifting of visa requirements for citizens of Moldova holding a biometric passport.<\/p>\n

Once the European Parliament will debate and approve the regulation, it also needs to pass the approval of the Council of the European Union and then to be ratified by the member states.<\/p>\n

So far, no European country has said they would oppose a visa-free travel regime for Moldova.<\/p>\n

Sources from Brussels told Moldova.ORG that the European Parliament is likely to include this issue on their agenda immediately after the Christmas break, as the file is currently being distributed to the shadows of the political groups of the EU Parliament.<\/p>\n
