The decision would apply to citizens holding a Moldovan biometric passport.<\/p>\n<p>Cecilia Malmstr&ouml;m, EU Commissioner for Home Affairs, said in a statement that travelling to the European Union without a visa will enhance contacts between people.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&ldquo;I am very pleased to propose to abolish visa requirements for Moldovan citizens holding a biometric passport,&rdquo; Cecilia Malmstr&ouml;m said. &ldquo;The possibility to travel to the EU without a visa will further facilitate people-to-people contacts and strengthen business, social and cultural ties between the European Union and Moldova.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The European official hopes that other Eastern Partnership states will also seek a visa-free travel regime with the EU and bring their legislation in line with the European standards.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&ldquo;It is my sincere hope that other Eastern partners seeking visa-free travel to the EU will continue to work towards achieving this important goal,&rdquo; the Home Affairs Commissioner stressed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">EU Commission&rsquo;s recommendation comes one day prior to the Vilnius Eastern Partnership Summit where Moldova is expected to initial an Association Agreement with the European Union. On November 15 the Commission released its fifth report on Moldova&rsquo;s implementation of the Visa Liberalization Action Plan (VLAP), claiming that the country &ldquo;meets all the benchmarks set in the four blocks of the second phase of the VLAP.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy Commissioner, &Scaron;tefan F&uuml;le said on Wednesday that the visa liberalization, as well as the future accord with the EU will bring tangible advantages for the citizens of Moldova.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&ldquo;I am delighted we are able to make this proposal on the eve of the Eastern Partnership Summit in Vilnius where we also plan to initial the Association Agreement, including Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area with Moldova,&rdquo; &Scaron;tefan F&uuml;le said. &ldquo;These are significant milestones on Moldova&#8217;s way to a closer political association and economic integration with Europe &ndash; and ones that will bring tangible benefits for Moldovan citizens.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In order to be enforced, the Commission&rsquo;s proposal to lift visa requirements for Moldova has to be discussed by the Council of the EU and the European Parliament.
