Ukraine has decided to suspend its preparation process for the Eastern Partnership Summit where the country was expected to sign the Association Agreement with the EU, Interfax news agency reported on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The Summit is due to take place on November 28 – 29, 2013 in Vilnius, Lithuania. Ukraine’s signature of the accord with EU was supposed to become the landmark of the Vilnius Summit.<\/p>\n

The European Commission has requested the Ukrainian lawmakers to free Yulia Tymoshenko from prison. According to the EU, the former opposition political figure’s imprisonment is a politically motivated decision, claiming that Ukraine still deals with selective justice and corruption.<\/p>\n

Ukrainian cabinet agreed on Thursday that their European integration has to be stopped in order to “protect jobs” and “national security” and have a closer relation with the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).<\/p>\n

However, President of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych said that his country remains open to European integration, suggesting that the Association Agreement could be revised later.<\/p>\n

EU High Representative Catherine Ashton said in a statement on Thursday evening that Kiev’s decision is “a disappointment” for both the EU and Ukrainians, adding that the Association Agreement would have “sent a clear signal to investors worldwide as well as to international financial institutions that Ukraine is serious about its modernization pledge and becoming a predictable and reliable interlocutor for international markets.”<\/p>\n

“This is a disappointment not just for the EU but, we believe, for the people of Ukraine,” Catherine Ashton said.<\/p>\n

The members of the monitoring mission to Ukraine, Pat Cox and Aleksander Kwasniewski said in a joint statement that Ukraine’s move is a “deep disappointment” for them.<\/p>\n

“We express our deep disappointment at the unilateral decision of the Ukrainian Government to postpone the signing of the Association Agreement with the European Union,” the European officials said in their joint statement.<\/p>\n

To cover their turn against EU, Ukrainian government proposed on Thursday the creation of a trilateral commission that would include Ukraine, the EU and Russia to seek ways to enhance their relations.<\/p>\n

Ukraine has faced a lot of pressure from Russia lately, the latter banning imports of chocolate and other goods produced here.<\/p>\n

Swedish Foreign Minister, Carl Bildt said on his Twitter account that “politics of brutal pressure evidently works,” as “Ukraine government suddenly bows deeply to the Kremlin.”<\/p>\n

Freedom House believes that Ukraine’s rejection of closer EU integration is “a significant step back from democracy and human rights.” The watchdog stated that President Yanukovych failed to advance his country’s best interests.<\/p>\n

“Yanukovych has decided it’s more important to keep Tymoshenko in prison than to integrate Ukraine closer toward Europe,” said David J. Kramer, president of Freedom House. “He has left his country vulnerable to Vladimir Putin’s threats and pressure. That will be Yanukovych’s legacy if he doesn’t reverse course.”<\/p>\n

Now EU’s only hope remains Moldova and Georgia who are expected to initial Association Agreements at the Vilnius Summit.<\/p>\n
