A resolution in this regard was voted on Wednesday in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<p>It came from Eliot Engel, Senior Democratic Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, who introduced a bipartisan bill with Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce and Subcommittee Chairman Ted Poe.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The resolution supports the European aspirations of countries from Eastern Europe to enhance their ties with the European Union through the Eastern Partnership initiative.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&ldquo;Countries such as Ukraine, Moldova, and Georgia have the sovereign right to enter into partnerships of their choosing, and closer relations with Europe will greatly benefit these states and the wider region,&rdquo; the authors of the resolution said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&ldquo;This resolution makes clear that aspirant Eastern Partnership members must be allowed to exercise their sovereign rights. At the same time, the resolution stresses that while we applaud significant progress on reforms to date, we urge aspirant states to continue to adopt democratic norms and standards and to meet clear and essential conditions for closer economic and political ties with Europe&rdquo;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Moldova and Georgia are expected to initial an Association Agreement with the European Union at the Vilnius Summit next week.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Anders &Aring;slund, Senior Fellow at Peterson Institute for International Economics testified last week to the Senate&rsquo;s Foreign Relations Subcommittee on European Affairs about the Eastern Partnership. According to him, the Eastern Partnership Summit is one of the most important events in Europe.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&ldquo;No political event in Europe this year is more important than this summit,&rdquo; Mr. &Aring;slund said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">He said that Moldova is a &ldquo;much simpler&rdquo; case for the European Union given that the country is more democratic than its Eastern neighbor, Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&ldquo;Moldova is more democratic, freer, and less corrupt than Ukraine,&rdquo; the expert said. &ldquo;The current Moldovan government is pro-European and supports European integration whole-heartedly.
