Moldovan Prime Minister Iurie Leanca urges for “genuine engagement and commitment from outside” in government’s attempts to find a peaceful and sustainable solution for the Transnistrian conflict.<\/p>\n

Speaking from the United Nations tribune in New York on Thursday, Iurie Leanca pointed out that Transnistria is a constant challenge for Moldova that undermines the country’s development efforts.<\/p>\n

“The political settlement of the conflict and the reintegration of the country is our strategic priority,” the Moldovan Premier said. “It envisages uniting the population from the both banks of the Nistru River around shared goals and providing them with a better future. It also means removing one of the most fundamental challenges to our national security, economic development and social cohesion.<\/p>\n

The leader said that the Transnistrian conflict settlement should guarantee secured national borders and open a new perspective of stability. He maintains that only a peaceful conflict resolution can be accepted.<\/p>\n

“There are more than two decades of peace in the region and we will spare no effort to preserve it further,” Iurie Leanca said. “Peace and dialogue are fundamental prerequisites for a political solution to any conflict.”<\/p>\n

The pro-Western politician emphasized that the solution should respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Moldova. However, his government is “open for a reasonable compromise on a special status of the region within the Republic of Moldova,” adding that such a regulation would grant the population residing on the left bank of the Nistru River a “comfortable and guaranteed level of self governance in various areas of public life.”<\/p>\n

Iurie Leanca did not forget to reiterate his country’s “longstanding and unwavering call to finalize the withdrawal of the Russian military forces and ammunition from the territory of the Republic of Moldova in accordance with relevant international commitments.”<\/p>\n

Russia has not fully withdrawn its army and ammunitions from the territory of Moldova. The former 14th Soviet army is still stationed here, acting as peacekeeping force, as it was previously named.<\/p>\n

Iurie Leanca was not the only high-ranking official to demand the withdrawal of the Russian troops.<\/p>\n

Georgian President, Mikheil Saakashvili also called on Russia from the UN tribune to “de-occupy Abkhazia and South Ossetia” which are Georgian territories, but heavily supported by Russia. Kremlin was the first and only side to recognize the independence of the two regions.<\/p>\n

“Eastern European countries aspiring to join the European family of free and democratic nations faced constant pressures and threats,” Mr. Saakashvili said. “Armenia had been cornered and the Republic of Moldova blockaded; Ukraine was under attack, Azerbaijan faced extraordinary pressure and Georgia was occupied, all because an old empire was trying to regain its bygone margins. The Kremlin would not agree to discuss the de-occupation of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, and the annexation of Georgian lands by Russian troops continued.” <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
