EU Parliament’s rapporteur for Moldova, Sir Graham Watson said in a statement for Moldova.ORG that Russia has become an unreliable partner for Moldova that still occupies territories of EU’s Eastern Partners, in Moldova’s case – Transnistria.<\/p>\n

“The Eastern Partners know all too well that their big neighbour is unreliable,” Sir Watson said. “It is, after all, the same neighbour that turned off the heat in freezing temperatures and stopped buying in water and wine in the worst economic times.”<\/p>\n

The Russian Federation has stopped the natural gas delivery to Moldova in the winter of 2009. The final consumers had to freeze during the low temperatures because the plants were not able to generate heat due to lack of energy resources.<\/p>\n

Moldova is entirely relying on natural gas resources originating from Russia’s Gazprom. On August 27, 2013 Moldova and Romania started a joint project that is intended to connect Moldova with the European energy network. The project is expected to be functional as of winter 2014.<\/p>\n

Russia has threatened Moldova early this month that if the government will initial the Association Agreement with the European Union in November, it is likely that the bilateral relations will be affected.<\/p>\n

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin warned that should it be the case, he hopes that the Moldovans “will not freeze in winter.” Moreover, the Russian Sanitary Service “Rospotrebnadzor” said they will ban imports of wine from Moldova if the responsible authorities do not undertake additional measures to boost the quality of wine.<\/p>\n

“There is a consensus amongst MEPs that Russia cannot exert undue pressure on the Eastern partners and has to fully respect their right to pursue their own political and economic destiny. In addition, Russia, as a new member of the WTO, has to learn that it can’t constantly threaten politically-motivated trade and customs restrictions,” Graham Watson said.<\/p>\n

He pointed out that Russia is “the same neighbour that to this day still occupies some of the Eastern Partners’ back yards,” referring to the protracted conflicts in the region, namely the Transnistrian conflict in the Moldovan case. “Taking it up on its derisory offer would mean making the same mistake all over again.”<\/p>\n

Graham Watson mentioned that the European Parliament’s stance with respect to the Eastern Partnership (EaP) countries and the Vilnius Summit is clear.<\/p>\n
